(PSP all versions)

A tutorial by Mar © 200

What you need:
PSP
Download a 30 day trial here.
Materials:
Download here.
Open all images from the ZIP in PSP.
Open the font and minimize.
You'll see it in your text tool now.

Save often.
Let's
get started. Good luck.....

This tutorial is done in PSP 9.

Open one of the card basis.
F
or this tutorial I used MD-JollyBase1.jpg.
Shift-D to duplicate. Close the original.

Image > Add borders > 100 Pixels left > Black.
Uncheck Symmetric.

With your magic wand (feather 0 - Tolerance 10) select the black border.

Now look for a pattern that looks good with the base (some in ZIP).
With this pattern you will fill the letters too.
I used MD-TextPattern-3.jpg but feel free to use one of your own.

Foreground to pattern.
Look for the "your pattern".
Texture unchecked (blue hand).

Fill your black selection with the pattern.

Effects > 3D-effects > Drop shadow > Black.
Watch................. Vertical to 0.

Apply.

Selections > None.

Now open the MD-JollyMask.jpg.

Open a new image 325 X 375 and fill with a
matching color or pattern. I used green #3b6b4b.

Layers > New mask layer > From image.

Look for the MD-JollyMask.jpg.

Layers > Merge > Merge group.

Copy and go back to your card image.

Edit > Paste > Paste as a new layer.

Move the mask image to the right so it is
 in the middle
of the base and move it a bit up too.

If all went well you now have this:

Open the MD-Jolly-Santas.psp.
Shift-D to duplicate and close the original.

Now we are going to fill the white letters with the pattern we also
used for the left side of our card. Of course you are free to use
another pattern if you want to. Be creative and  do as you like.

With your magic wand (feather 0 - Tolerance 10) select the white letters.
You can do this piece by piece or you
can hold your Shift-key down if you
want to fill more pieces at once. PSP 8+ versions can put the settings to add.

Fill your letters with the pattern but put the scale to 50.

Zoom in and take a good look if you didn't miss
some small parts. If you did missed some.... do it now.

When done filling:
Selections >
None.

Now copy your Santa's  and go back to your card.

Edit > Paste > Paste as a new layer.

Move over the mask piece.

Effects > 3D-effects > Drop shadow > Black.

Open a new image 275 X 60.
Fill with the pattern but first put the scale back to 100%.

Layers > New raster layer.

Selections > Select all.
Selections > Modify > Contract with 10 pixels.
Fill the selection with the same color you used for
the mask image. Mine was green #3b6b4b.

Repeat the drop shadow but this time Vert. and Horiz. at  1 and at - 1.

Layers > Merge > Merge visible layers.

Copy the text label and go back to your card.

Edit > Paste > Paste as a new layer.

In your Layer Palette > Move this layer beneath the Santa's Layer.

Put all things in place.
The text
label needs to hang on the two balls.
While moving consider the page curl that you will put on the card.
So you need some space in the right top corner.

This is how my card looks like:

Layers > Merge > Merge visible layers.

Background to #e21a25 and foreground locked.

Click and look for the opened Kabel Ult BT. It's in the ZIP.
Size 18 > Stroke 0,0 > B for Bold > Anti-alias checked or Sharp.

Type your text. I used Happy Holidays.
Because you already have Merry Christmas (the filled letters) you don't
use this text for a second time. But Season Greetings will do fine too.
It is possible you have to adjust the size for the text so it will fit the label.

If your text is to wide to fit the text label: push it in with  (PSP X & XI  ).

Layers > Convert to raster

Repeat the last used drop shadow at 2.

Put your text in the middle of your text label.

Unlock your foreground and put the stroke to 4.
Foreground color #3b6b4b or use your own color.

Put the font size to 72 and type 2 0 0 7.
As you can see.... after each number you have to give a space.

Layers > Convert to raster.

Image > Free rotation > 90 Degrees to the left.
All layers unchecked
.

Move the text on the 100 border you added in the beginning.

Effects > 3D-effects > Inner bevel > White.

Repeat the last used drop shadow at 2.

Open the MD-Jolly-Santa1.psp and copy.

Edit > Paste > Paste as a new layer.

Move  Santa on the 7.

Repeat the last used drop shadow at 1.

Open the MD-Jolly-Santa2.psp and copy.

Edit > Paste > Paste as a new layer.

Move  Santa under the 2.

Repeat the last used drop shadow at 1.

My card looks like this:

Layers > Merge > Merge all flatten.

PSP 8, 9, X and XI users begin where the *** stars are.

PSP 7 users
(filter here):
PSP 7 users don't have the page curl from PSP 8, 9
, X & XI.
That's why I will
show PSP 7 users how to do this:
Effects > Plugins > Mac's Page Curl.
Set all the slides about 80% from the right except
the top slide. That one needs to go to about 30%.

*** PSP 8, 9, X en XI users.
Effects > Image effects > Page Curl > Color #467e5b.
Take a grey color for the background color.

With your magic wand, select the grey corner.
Fill the selection with the pattern you used before.

Selections > None.

Your Jolly Xmas Card is done.
I hope you like this tutorial.
Thank you for putting it to the test.
