Save your work often.

We are going to start now.
Good luck with your Pinwheel.

This tutorial can only be animated if you have Animation Shop (AS).
If you are a new PSP user and you only have PSP X without AS you can
download AS for free at the Jacs site.
http://FTP.jasc.Com/pub/en/ani311en.exe

Open the FlagUSA.jpg or go to the internet to find
the flag of your own country. If possible a flying flag.
For the Netherlands & Germany at the bottom (the examples) a ZIP.

Make your flag square using the crop tool .
Resize the image to about 200 X 200.
Don't forget to sharpen after you changed size.

Do you only have a smaller flag?
Open and copy the flag. Open a new image 200 X 200.
Select all and paste the flag into selection. Done.

This tutorial is made with the USA flag so I continue the tutorial from here.
The USA flag is already at the right size.

Layers > Duplicate.

Image > Change size at 75% > Bicubic.
Change size for all layers unchecked.

Layers > Duplicate.
Image > Change size at 75% > Bicubic.

Layers > Duplicate.
Image > Change size at 75% > Bicubic.

You now have 4 layers.
Three layers are reduced in size.

Layers > Merge > Merge visible.

Open the MD-Pinwheelmask.jpg.

Go back to your merged flag.

Layers > New mask layer > From image.

Look for the  MD-Pinwheelmask.jpg and apply.
Invert mask data checked.

Apply.

Layers > Merge > Merge group.

Image > Canvas size 400 X 400 > Center.

Open the MD-pinwheelcenter.psp and copy.

Edit > Paste > Paste as a new layer.

No need to move the button. It is nice in the middle.

Layers > Merge > Merge visible.

Selections > Select all.
Selections > Float.
Selections > Defloat.
Selections > Modify > Contract with 5 pixels.

Selections > Float.
Selections > Defloat.

Layers > New raster layer.

Fill the selection with white.
As you can see not everything is selected.
Take your lasso and keep your Shift key down to select
the part's that aren't filled. Stay within the selection borders.

Fill again with white until all holes are closed.
If you use
d another pattern it might be nice to choose a matching
light color. Like light pink with purple and light yellow with green.

In your layer Palette > Move this layer to the bottom.

Layers > Merge > Merge visible.

Selections > None.

Move this layer to the top right.
Not all the way to the top since your blades needs
the space to rotate. Keep about 2 raster block
free.

Layers > New raster layer.

With your rectangle selection tool
make a narrow selection down for the stick.
Make the selection about 1 grey raster block width.

Open the MD-Pinweelwood.jpg.
Foreground to pattern and look for the wood.
Texture unchecked (=bl
ue hand).

Fill the selection with the wood pattern.

Effects > 3D-effects > Inner bevel > White.

Selections > None.

Image > Rotate > Free rotation > 40 Degrees right.

Move the layer with the stick beneath the layer with the blades.
Rename this layer "Stick 1".

DON'T MERGE!!

Layers > Duplicate.
Repeat this 4 times. You must have 5 layers with the stick.
Rename the layers from bottom up to top:
Stick 2, Stick 3, Stick 4, and Stick 5.

Select the layer with the blades and rename it 'Blades 1' (=blue).
Layers > Duplicate.

Image > Rotate > Free rotation > 20 Degrees right.
Adjust > Sharpness > Sharpen.

Rename this layer 'Blades 2'.

Select the layer 'Blades 2' (=blue).
Layers > Duplicate.

Image > Rotate > Free rotation > 20 Degrees right.
Adjust > Sharpness > Sharpen.

Rename this layer 'Blades 3'.

Select the layer  'Blades 3' (=blue).
Layers > Duplicate.

Image > Rotate > Free rotation > 20 Degrees right.
Adjust > Sharpness > Sharpen.

Rename this layer 'Blades 4'.

Select the layer  'Blades 4' (=blue).
Layers > Duplicate.

Image > Rotate > Free rotation > 20 Degrees right.
Adjust > Sharpness > Sharpen.

Rename this layer 'Blades 5'.

Lock all layers except  the Stick 5 and Blades 5 layers.
See screenshot.

Your top layer (Blades 5) is selected (= bleu).

Layers > Merge > Merge visible.

Immediately lock this merged layer.

Now unlock the "Blades 4 and Stick 4" layers.
Always select the top layer of the two you opened (= bleu).
Repeat: Layers > Merge > Merge visible.
Immediately lock this second merged layer.

Repeat the above steps with the blades and sticks 3, 2 and 1.
Don't forget to immediately lock the new merged layer
and that you always have to be on the top layer of the
two layers that you are about to merge visible.
So never merge more than two layers at the time.

If all went well you have 5 merged layers.

Unlock them all.

Save your work as pinwheel.psp.

PSP 7 users can just save as pinwheel.psp.
PSP 8 - 9 and 10 users......
Because Animation Shop doesn't recognize *.pspimage you have to save as *.PSP.
This can be done in 2 different ways:

Use this one for all early 8 and 9 versions.
Animation Shop doesn't recognize *.pspimage from
PSP 8 and 9 so we save as a PSP 7 or 6 file. Like this:
Save as > Click options and save as a *.psp 6 or 7 compatible file.

Use this one for the latest versions.
The latest PSP 9 and all PSP X versions have the option to
directly save as PSP for Animation Shop.
Look in the pull down menu and select Animation Shop (*psp).

Open your pinwheel.psp in Animation Shop (AS) .
You have 5 frames.

Zoom in and out again. Now you see them.
Click Ctrl-A to select
all 5 frames.

Animation > Properties for frame > Set your frame time at 20.

Open MD-Happy4th.jpg in AS and copy.

Go back to your animation.

Make sure you still have all frames selected (Ctrl A).

In AS activate propagate paste.

Edit > Paste > Paste in selected frame.

Now move with your mouse over your first frame.
Click on the place you want your banner to be.
As you will see it is pasted in all 5 frames. Isn't that great!
Make sure your blades have the space to rotate.
Because I liked it
when my stick was visible beneath the banner
I placed my banner almost against the blades.

Animation > Properties of animation.
Click on the color and choose any color you like.
Double click the box
as in the screenshot. I used white.

Crop your animation in AS (the black frame).

If you want a frame around your background, first save as GIF.
If you don't save, you will not get the background exporting to PSP.

Make sure you still have all frames selected (Ctrl A).
Edit > Export Frames > To Paint Shop Pro.

In PSP you now have an image with 5  layers.
Select the top layer (= bl
ue).

Selections > Select all.
Selections > Modify > Contract with 5 pixels.
Selections > Invert.

Effects > 3D-effects > Inner bevel > White.

Repeat the inner bevel on each of the other 4 layers.

Click the little cross in the right corner to close the image.

PSP will ask you if you want to save.
Answer: No.

On the next question if you want to keep the changes in AS.
Answer: Yes.

Again save your animation by clicking the save button.

For other text I have added a blank banner in the ZIP.
The Font Patriot is also included in the ZIP for you.

Your Pinwheel is done.
I hope you like this tutorial.
Thank you for trying them out.

The NL flag and the banner with the
Nederland  text can be downloaded here.

The 4th of July is my birthday too so I made myself a pinwheel
.... LOL.
I used light pink for the fill layer beneath the mask instead of white.
For a celebration pinwheel you can use any gradient you like.
You should do this when using a gradient:
When you resize the layers by 75 %, rotate the layers - meaning
: every
second layer by 45 degrees. So one layer is straight and the next rotated.
