Fractal Snowflake Frame
(PSP all versions)
A tutorial by Mar © 2006

What you need:
Corel PSP. Download a 30 day trial here.
The materials: Download here.
Open all images from the ZIP in PSP.
The tubes in the ZIP are done by my
dear internet friend Silke.
(Thanks Hun. The PSP community and I appreciate it).
Vielen dank liebe Silke, ihre tube sind wirklich toll.
The
Fractal Snowflake Generator program. Download here.
Install the program in it's own folder and launch it.

Save often.
Let's g
et started. Good luck.....

Start the program Fractal Snowflake Generator.
Because the screenshot was to large for this page, I had to reduce the size.
The settings from the left to the right
are: 8 - 12 - 0,0 - 50   // 75   // 95 - 70,0   // 400 - 500.

Background black and Foreground white.
This is such a nice program because you
can make fractal snowflakes in all colors.
Apply and save to BMP (= blue hand).

Open the bitmap you just made in PSP.

It's size is 400 X 500 pixels.

Shift-D to duplicate the image.
Make the original small (minus sign in top corner) for later use.

Selections > Select all.

Selections > Modify > Contract with 30 pixels.
Selections > Invert.

Effects > Reflection effects > Pattern.

Effects > 3D-effects > Inner bevel > Color white.

Copy the frame and paste it as a new image.
Edit > Paste > Paste as a new image.
You need it later in this tutorial so make it small for now.

Selections > Select all.
Selections > Modify > Contract with 25 pixels.

Background to black.
Click delete. The middle part is black now.
If not > Fill with the black.

With your color picker take two colors from your image.
A light  (foreground) and a dark (background).
I used a red gradient.
Foreground: #d31f16 and background #530101.

Foreground to gradient.
Look for the "Fore-background" gradient.
Texture unchecked (blue hand).

Fill your black selection with the gradient.

Selections > Invert.

Effects > 3D-effects > Drop shadow > Black.

Repeat the drop shadow but this time Vert. and Horiz. at - 5.

Selections > Invert.

Selections > Modify > Contract with 25 pixels.

Layers > New raster layer.

If all is well you still have the frame in your PC's memory.
If not.... go to the frame you pasted as a new image and copy it.

Edit > Paste > Paste into selection.

Selections > Invert.
Repeat the drop shadow at 5 and at - 5.

With your magic wand (feather  0) click in your small frame.

Now you have two options. Use the frame for an image or a tube.
I will work you true both options.

If you want to use an image:
********************************
Layers > New raster layer.
In your Layer Palette move this layer
beneath the layer of the top frame.

Selections > Modify > Expand with 5 pixels.
Edit > Paste > Paste into selection.
Selections > None.

Skip the next steps and continue with the
step that has the stars *** in front of the line.

If you want to use a tube:
********************************
Selections > Modify > Expand with 5 pixels.
In your Layer Palette select the bottom layer (=blue).

Effects > Texture effect > Blinds.

Layers > New raster layer.

Open your tube and copy it.
I used a gorgeous tube that was made by my friend Silke.
(Thanks Hun. The PSP community and I appreciate it).
Vielen dank liebe Silke, ihre tube sind wirklich toll.

Edit > Paste > Paste into selection.

Selections > None.

*** Layers > Merge > Merge all flatten.

Now we are going to make the corner.

Go to your original Fractal Snowflake Generator image.

If you take a good look you'll see  there is a star in the middle.
Put your lasso tool to feather 2.

Select the star.
Concentrate to follow the lines.
I do hope you won't get dizzy LOL.

Edit > Paste > Paste as a new image.

Image > Change size 50% > Resize all layers checked.

Effects > 3D-effects > Inner bevel > Color white.

Now it is up to you how you want to decorate your corner.
I have added a file with gems (MD-Gems.psp) in the ZIP.
Or you can use a small flower or other decoration.

If your corner is decorated with gems or other decoration:
Layers > Merge > Merge visible layers.

If you like it you can also cut out a corner with your lasso tool.
Take a look at the second example at the bottom of this tutorial.

Copy the corner and go back to your frame.

Edit > Paste > Paste as a new layer.

Effects > 3D-effects > Drop shadow > Black.

Move to the left upper corner.

Layers > Duplicate.
Image > Mirror.

Lock your background for now.
Layers > Merge > Merge visible layers.

Layers > Duplicate.
Image > Flip.

Unlock your background.

Layers > Merge > Merge all flatten.

Image > Add borders > 5 Pixels > Symmetric > Yellow.

With your magic wand (feather 0) select the yellow border.
Fill the selection with your gradient.

You can do this frame in all colors.
Your frame looks best on a black or dark background.

Your Fractal Snowflake Frame is done.
I hope you like this tutorial.
Thank you for putting it to the test.
